New Tank Syndrome?

Hi everyone!
I'm a newbie, so please excuse me if I ask silly questions.
I recently bought a new 30L Rena tank that came with a filter. Prior to this, what we had was just a small glass jar with one goldfish. We want to 'expand' our hobby, hence the new tank.
I've placed new pebbles and new plant in it, placed tap water and a little water conditioner, then later on, placed my goldfish in it. within minutes, the fish swam in a disoriented manner and just slumped at the bottom of the tank. I also placed 2 other new goldfish in it. They also exhibit the same symptoms.
Worried, I took them out after half an hour and placed them in another bucket. A few hours later, nothing improved and 2 of the goldfish died.
Is this what you call a new tank syndrome? I checked pH level later on, it was ok. Ammonia level is not 0. Is this the cause of the fishes' death? But where did the ammonia come from if everything was new?

Please help.

look like tank is not ready. As to where the ammonia come from recently some hobbyist found ammonia in their age water. So it might be that our tapwater issue.

Nowadays is better to let the tank settle a few days before adding fishes.

Did you acclimatize the fish before you throw it into the new tank? New tank suppose the water should be very clean without any motion passed by the fish. It will only pass away when ammonia start to build up and there after... due to the tank not cycled.

The guy from the fish shop told me to constantly check ammonia level like every 2 days or so. He told me to put those $2 per pack of fish. I put them in yesterday. This morning, 15 out of 20 died. The remaining 5 seem to be doing ok.. but tomorrow I will update again. I'm not going to put in my sole survivor goldfish in just yet.

Oh and water is cloudy. You reckon a few more days as opposed to weeks? I hope so, though I dont know exactly when is a good indication that the tank is ready for my goldfish.

Yes I did acclimatize them. Yes thats what I thought, how can there be ammonia when everything is new? But apparently there is ammonia. Maybe like what avex30 said, it is from the tap water.

what brand of water conditonal did you use? certain brands are able to remove ammonia and nitrite. Probably a pic will spell a thousand words.

These few days our tap water not gd .. Try not to change water if you can.. As for your case I advise to put water and run the pump for at least 2 days before you add fishes .. Add anti chlorine if possible ...

Let me know you water pH level and which type of water conditioner are you using? Our tap water contain NH and is very normal, it is from chloramine.

The guy from the fish shop seem don't have knowledge on setting up a new aquarium.
