Depend on how big your tank, how many fish you're keeping and depend on ur filter media.
Normal case 6mths to 1yr

why wash when you see your medias are not clogged badly and dirty? maybe some bros here can show you some photos what is meant by badly clogged and dirty before maintenance.

i never wash my sump tank for many months and year. These BBs dun like to be disturbed much. I normally take out the media and give it a quick rinse with the tank water and place it back quickly. The rinse just to remove clogged dirt and bigger particles stuck. However, I change the initial wool filter regularly when they turn brown and after 2 weeks. I dun wash wool, I throw and change new ones.

Filter media do not need to wash, just simple cleaning will do IMO like those lose waste/dirt underneath the media just clear with a suction pipe ..
s for bio-ball ; Use your hand to stir and stir and pour in the tank water, and all the lose waste/dirt etc.. will just drop from the bio-ball and use suction to suck out from the bottom will do.
