Water and shrimp deaths...

My little home tank's shrimps are dying off and the CRS are losing their whites. I got myself a tetra test kit yesterday and checked the water parameters.

Found that NO3 (nitrate) level is in the high zone, plus the GH value was also quite high. What can I do to lower these two values?

I did... and more shrimps died. Even though I've run the water for more than a week.

Hi bro, I guess you should prepare aged-water in a pail, transfer the shrimps over, provided the water parameters are in the OK level but not too far away from their present, meaning, the Nitrite should be ard 20ppm and the Nitrate below the danger zone. This is just so that they can adapt easily and not die off due to vast change. Then aerate it....

Next, change the water like crazy in the tank, till you get the correct parameters. Meanwhile, also try to correct the parameters in the pail. To match the corrected parameters in the tank. Then after which, you may place them back.

I think this is the fastest and least stressed (on the shrimps). But you must have aged-water ready lah. Which I think is a requirement when keeping shrimps.

Did a lot of recovery work over the weekend. Changed most of the water, plus add some nitrate reducing tablets from 328. Tested the water with tetra test again. Water still GH high, but a little better. Nitrate level has lowered. But still shrimps are dying. My otto in the tank just died. Not a good sign at all...

How high was NO3 and GH? How high is NO3 and GH?

Last time my shrimps also suddenly die one by one...until i desperately started a brand new tank with no gravel.

Just put in a few wire mess tied with moss.
Add anti-chlorine/chlomaine.
Cycle tank for a week with help of bacterial to speed up cycling like Seachem Stability and Fritz.

That is. All surviving well till now.

One of the reason shrimps dying on a gravel tank is because the dirt build up in the gravel is too thick causing the whole gravel bed to collapse. For those with crs in gravel tank, I would recommend siphon the gravel frequently to prevent the build up.

guys, im using black gravel for my shrimps..
whenever i accidently move the gravel, the dirt or dunno what will come up.. den tank will be quite messy.. but it will be cleared without half an hour.. cause got filter..
should i remove everything and wash gravel? or change gravel?
