Default How many of you use beach sand ?

How many of you use beach sand for decorating your freshwater aquarium ? Any risks involved in doing so ?

very risky, you never know what bacteria or any weird things is inside the sand, you are better off buying aquarium sand.

agreed..it definitely not advisable esp now when it contaminated with oil

thats true..maybe u hav to soak the sand with aquarium salt for some time b4 using....

i jus it for my office tank..
i collect it from ecp bench..
about 1.5l bottle..
i took home and wash with normal tap water..
then i dip it in salt water for overnight..
after that i using boiling water from the kettle to sterilise it..
i go no problem using it..
my office guppy likes it very much
haha..

btw when u first wash, u will find a lot of bubbles..
very ugly buddles..
but slowly it become very clear when it settle down

btw taking sand from bench is it conside stealing?

Yes, it is illegal to take sand from public beach. This is also one of the
risk Do it at dark night when park wardens can't see you... I think
washing the sands with Dettol can kill 99% of the germs.

Agree.It may contain some unknown bacteria which may hurt to yr fishes
best is using aquarium sand dont make a risk if u keeping those expansive fishes

i collect the sand when i bring my nephew and niece to build sand castle..
hahahaaaaa...

anyway sometime i also dun noe how they treat the aquarrium sand..
hope they really go through the hot high temperature oven..
but i also dun dare to use the sand on rays...
cos they are too exp..... compare to 1.50 dollar guppies..
hahahaaaaaa
