hang on filter as a refugium?
hi guys...i was thinking after seeing so many small critters in the filter material of my hang on filter...could a hang on filter act as a refugium? my idea is to get one of those bigger transparent hang on filters and run it on my tank with sand and abit of live rocks in it of course...i'll turn to water flow to the minimal level to prevent the pods in there from being swept away back into the main tank...how does that sound? do u guys think it'll work? by the way i have a nano tank 36 x 22 x 25cm and is currently undergoing its cycling process.

From what i understand, it should work. However, the limited space of a hang-on filter may prevent it from functioning effectively for your tank size.
Another part i am a little concerned about is the added weight of the sand and rocks in the hang-on filter. I don't know how would the tank structure react to this added weight.

I used hanging filters in the past and I have a major problem with them: salt sprays.
Basically the water "splashes" no matter how you adjust the output. The splashes will cause salt deposits on your lights and cleaning them can be a chore. |

Unless you put the water out-source of the hang-on the same level as the tank water, or rather, put it in other words, increase the water level of your sump tank to the same level as the water out-source from the hang-on filter, this can prevent salt spray.

Pods are tiny living organisms found on the liverock, mostly beneficial to the system by being scavengers and food for the fishes, especially the mandarin fish.
We generally classify them as copepods, amphipods and isopods. Some species of isopods are parasitic and would cling onto fishes and suck their body fluids at night. If you wish to know more, do a search on the internet or this forum. You would be able to find plenty of information and pics on these critters.
