Default How often need to change water?

Hi everyone i just started rearing freshwater fishes in a 4ft tank for aroudn a month now~

How often do i need to change the water?

The water in my tank turns yellowish/brownish already after around 1 week, which i suspected is due to the log i put in~

My filter is the on top of the fish tank type, the long black rectangular kind~
The sponge turns extremely brownish also after 4days~

Not sure if frequently changing the water will harm my fishes, 1 week once is it counted as frequent?

What fishes are you keeping and how many? The brownish coloration is likely to be the tannins released from the wood. You are using overhead filter or OHF for short. Normally once to twice a week water change is advised but it is subjected to the fishes you are keeping.

WC at least once a week abt 20-30% depends on your bioload.

Need below info to further advice u:

1) Wat kind of fish u keeping?
2) The size of fish
3) Diet of fish
4) Wat filter media beside sponge?
5) Tank size 4x1.5x1.5 or 4x2x2?
6) Wat is the filter pump flow rate?

Take a pic of your tank and filter for better view.

Like what bros have mentioned ...it depends on size of tank, media used, fish keeping... Well , i do wc once every week abt 40%. Guess the fish in the tank r happy with it. Just my opinion.

upside down catfish x 2
crab x 2
tetras x 5 *the 30cents kind
angel fish x 1
suckerfish x 2
goldfish x 3
yellow cichlid x 2
pink cichlid? x 2 *looks almost the same as the yellow one but is pink~

cant find the rest...think i'll post a pic after i get home tonite~

so is this tannins given out by the wood deadly?
i had 2 crabs, 4 angelfish, and around total 10+ other tiny fishy that died on me within 2 weeks after i put my log in~
But for past 2 weeks nothing else happened to the remaining fishes and 2 crabs...

Also its been a month already i'm still gettign lots of brownish particles coming out from the log...is there something wrong with it? normal or?
