The "blues" from farm are actually normal red kelahs that have no red fins Got four other wc red bara juvs, two have their fins turned dark & look like blues now. Will be doing wtt to see if they change back to red tone. Have also about 30 wc bara fingerlings, shall see how they turn out next year.

Mr Ong, is that a 8ft tank?
Do you also find them very sensitive to PH especially after heavy feeding with symptoms of reddish tail and some more sensitive ones getting slight tail burn? I have a 4ft tank using a 5000l per hour circulation in a 3 ft sump. Sump is almost max on wool on first compartment, half on bio on second compartment and 3/4 on CC in last compartment. I also add in a powerhead just to circulate the main tank internal water flow. Quite kiasu already but the discharge from the fish will easily require me to WC at least once a week. If i have more off days i do twice but will be siong to keep up the regime of twice a week. What's you water maintenace regime like. Does putting sandbed cause more danger for accumulation of debris (e.g ammonia spike and ph fluctuation) in your opinion? |

6' tank, 4' sump.
Sand is ok. Kelahs are like kois/carps & forage the ground. WC 30-70% every wednesday & sunday. Water conditioner double dose with baxter 3in1 & pet frans ultimate coat. Your red veined fins are nitrite/ammonia poisoning. please decrease bioload or feeding volumes. Quote:

I find sand helpful to maintain water clarity.
Thin layer below 1" has little danger of anaerobic toxins. Thicker sandbed above 3" is best left undisturbed in sump rather than main tank. Hydrogen sulphide & nitrite poisoning is common.

nitrite problem. But almost 2 years tank. I tested for both at zero ppm recently. Thanks anyway. I'll test it again tonight it's not an often thing, just something I noted whenever their is heavy feeding. Maybe I should try twice weekly WC regime - there goes more of my time. |
