I normally trim them (60%) every week end to promote growth and also as a means of control.

I'm using a very old hang on filter and I break the water returning flow with a cut up pvc pipe...

After trim...

You every week trim the plants? Can they grow back in time?

Yes... for this tank...appox 2 - 4inches per week...

Will try to remember to post a picture this coming Saturday...

BTW, a skimmer is very important in a planted setup...it skims away excess oily saps should there be any....

I cut/trimmed my nana leaves when it turned yellowish or aged. I don't do it frequently and didn't have mass casualty. For your case, you could have cut the thicker stems or stalk of the plant resulting in greater "wound" and the sap seeped out? Just my guessing, never heard that trimming plants (of any sort) will kill shrimps.

A skimmer is a device that draws water from the surface of the water.

For canister usage, there are commercial ready units for sale that connects easily with the in-flow piping.

For hang on filters, you'll have to get those that comes with it....

There is a skimmer attachment fitted to the OHF, take a look at my last picture. It's the round device which has a thin layer of black filter wrap around it....
