I propose to clean your sump regularly. How often depends on the bioload in your tank.
Fishes poo, all the time, every day. This is trapped in the filter wool, some escape beyond. Filter wool should be washed every few days and this depends on the amount of debris on the wool, ie feeding regime, fish poo, etc. Again it depends on the number of fish you have in your tank. The more fishes, the shorter the cleaning interval. Filter wool MUST be clean for fish to be healthy. Besides the filter wool, debris also collect beyond. ie they clog up your biohome, ceramic rings, etc. So those also need some "cleaning" but in a different manner. Filter wool - wash off as much debris as u can. If they cannot be washed off satisfactorily, change the wool. Biohome, rings, etc - half yearly, just use ur hand and lightly move and disturb the media a bit, so that any loose dirt can be freed and suck up back into the tank, to the filter wool. It's important to do this to "unclog" the system. You will also see your tank become crystal clear after you do this. |

I think wool maintenance is a must...wash every day and change every week.
I do not wash the sump..I change media every year...part by part...then u have a full functioning sump all the time...no blind spots |

IMO, buy those white wool with those better quality type... dun buy just because its cheap.
Better quality is more stiffer and u can feel more harder than those lower quality which they use for pillow... |
