I've seen these shrimps before in the States but I've not seen anyone bring this into Singapore but maybe you can try Taka as earlier suggested by EDM Chan...

These shrimps as stated earlier are from Hawaii... I've only seen them in Ecospheres & I've never seen them sell it any other way...

Just info to share Eco / Biospheres are total enclosed glass balls... Inside these spheres are some shrimp (The type we are talking about in this thread) & some plants. It is an ideal Ecosystem.

The shrimps feed on the plants & produce Oxygen, the plants in turn get their nutrients from the shrimp through their waste & Carbon Dioxide they produce.

The reason why the price is so high is because the manufacturer managed to encase this environment in a glass "ball" with water, shrimps & plants. I've read that the shrimps can survive for several years...

This is a very interesting item which I too wanted to purchase the last time I saw them but seriously the price was too high for me...

I don't have additional info I can contribute but I think your best chance is to look for someone in the States to find out for you... It would be even better if you can manage to get a contact in Hawaii...

Just something to add I seriously do not suggest that you buy the Ecosphere & break it open... It defeats the whole purpose of buying the Ecosphere in the first place... But this is just my personal opinion...

actually, the shrimps starve to death slowly. They are just very hard to kill.

for your info.. the shrimp did not feed on the plants or any algae.. the algae inside the torturesphere is way too less for them too eat.. they simply just go on starving for a few years.

HeiBee is right, I had read articles regarding this. The shrimps are very very hardy and they really starve to death.

The shrimp requires special environment for them to survive, it will not survive in our tank. That's why the create a biosphere to keep the shrimp in there. My guess is that the water must be very acidic.

Personally I will not support such products, as it is really cruelty.

What do the Shrimp Eat?
The shrimp eat algae and bacteria. If you watch them closely, you will see them feeding on the algae and picking bacteria off the walls of the sphere. They also eat their own shed exoskeletons. Nothing goes to waste!
if this is true then they dont really starve to death but its ' chi bu bao,er bu si'-not enough food to keep itself full yet enough to keep itself alive.
