You should have at least an inche of soil in there in the first place. The contrast of the dark coloured soil will bring out your shrimps colour and also help in cultivating bacteria underneath there.

Thanks, Blank, berber and Koji for the nice comments. Koji bro, I was also thinking about that. But it's too late to change, when I decide to upgrade my tank size, then I'll add soil as base.

Hi all just to share that my Fire Red gave birth to shirmplets and bought a new tank mate. So exciting. Hope that my CRS mature quickly to have off-springs too...

Actually you can add a layer of dark coloured soil over what you are having.
