ranchu 3 feet tank water is very cloudy
hi all experience bros,
like to seek advice from experienced forummers on my new 3 feet tank , the tank is 2 days old and I am using the dolphin c-1600 canister filter. After set up, the the tank and filter running for 2 days before I put 9 piece of 4 inch ranchu in. after one nite and of course some feeding, the water becomes cloudy. wondering if this is a natural process to allow the building of bacteria or the canister is not up to its task. the canister filter got 5 layers, the lowest 3 layers is filled with those white sponge like material and the top 2 most layer with azoo active filter 4 in one. pls offer advice as this is causing a lot of frustrations. thank you a thousand times in advance for all the help Lim |

canister filter is the worst to use for keeping goldfish. go either sponge or OHF is you really want to use a filter.
your tank is not cycle yet. read up on fish tank nitrogen cycle and do something before the fish go meet their maker. 9 pcs of GF for a 3ft tank is way too small. either you reduce your bio load or change to a bigger tank. good luck. |

Bro. 2 days is nowhere near enough time to establish a filter.
2 weeks would be chancing it with your levl of bioload. Stop/drastically reduce feeding for now to decrease the amount of waste going into the water. You will need a quality dechlorinator on hand so you can do daily 50% water changes for the couple of weeks it will take the filter to establish. Preferably use one with ammonia detoxifier like AST Ultimate. Do you have a water test kit? You will need to test daily for ammonia, nitrite and nitrate. You will know your filter is working when your ammonia and nitrite is unreadable, and nitrate is high. |

I googled the canister. This 1000lph system is way way undersized for 9x 4in ranchu. Even when matured, I don't think it can handle half that bioload... If you want to maintain this bioload, u need to get a much larger aquarium. The 3ft tank can be repurposed as a sump tank, which is just about the only way such a heavy load can be borne even in a 4 or 5 ft tank.
