The entire back area of the IQ5 is an IOS. First chamber is for filtration media. Next is sponge chamber. Last is where the powerhead is installed. Are you referring to the intake slots or the round hole between first & second chamber?

The round hole is there as a water bypass to the next chamber, in case media get clogged from neglected maintenance. Without this round hole, the chamber will flood and spill over.

If you have water flowing freely between first two chambers, it simply means you've topped up too much water.

Personally, I lay a thin layer of filter wood, covering the entire first chamber plus the round hole, because I over-fill slightly for water loss from evaporation. Wool is easy to remove and extend intervals between maintenance.

It is easier if YOU show pics of what you're doing.

The flow of water should be through those slots, down the chamber, go to next sponge chamber, then to powerhead.

You should not see a flooded first chamber but when you see tiny air bubbles coming from the out-tube, you know it's time to top up water.

Water loss from evaporation is normal but more frequent top-ups if you're using additional fan to cool the water... and that is part and parcel of the hobby, bro.
