Fish Profiles

Default Badis badis bengalensis "scarlet"

Stats:
Adult Size: 3 " (8 cm)
Temp: 75-80 F (24-26 C)
pH: <7
Tank: 24" (60 cm) minimum

Requirements:
Lots of plants, wood used as a shelter. Good hiding place for each fish in a tank.

Diet:
Small live foods, and some frozen, not often eating flake or other prepared foods.

Breeding:
Male is ventrally concave, much more colorful. Father cares for young, less than 150 eggs in general.
Sociability: Pairs, or small groups in a larger tank.

Default Pristella maxillaris aka 'X-Ray fish'

Stats:
Adult Size: 2" (5 cm)
Temp: 74-82° F (24-28° C)
Ph: 6.0 to 8.0 (prefers 7.0)
Tank: 24" (60 cm) minimum

Requirements:
Darkly arranged tank, open space for swimming. Peaceful tankmates.

Diet:
Generally eat all kinds of live, fresh, and flake foods. To keep a good balance give them a high quality flake food everyday. Feed brine shrimp (either live or frozen) or blood worms as a treat.

Sexual Differences:
The male is more slender with a sharply pointed swim bladder. The female is more rounded and you can actually see the eggs in a mature female.

Breeding:
Male: slimmer. Can be picky about partners. Lays many eggs in one attempt.

Default Phenacogrammus interruptus

Congo Tetra

Family:
Alestiidae

Origin:
Congo Bason, Zaire.

Stats:
Adult Size: 8cm
Temp: 74-82° F (24-28° C)
Ph: 6-8
Tank: A 3ft or larger tank is recommended

Diet:
Ominvore. Can feed with flakes or worms.

Sexual Differences:
The male Congo Tetra has extended dorsal and tail fins. It is also larger and more colourful than the female. A male is pictured above.

Breeding:
Hard, though brighter than normal lighing can often initiate breeding.

Default Nannostomus mortenthaleri

Common Names:
Coral Red Pencilfish

Origin:
South America

Stats:
Adult Size: 1.5" to 2"
Temp: 74-82° F (24-28° C)
Ph: 7

Requirements:
Keep in groups of six or more to avoid fin nipping and species specific agression. It is suggested to keep this fish in a well planted tank.


Diet:
Feed with live invertebrates (ie: brine shrimp, blood worms) but will except frozen and prepared foods after some adjustment.
