Journal on my new shrimp tank

My buddy and I decided to embarked on a new shrimp tank after gaining some exposure and a tiny whinny little bit of experience.

Both of us had ordered for customized tank to be built. Attached is the tank i ordered


The tank will be used for keeping higher grades shrimps like BKK, Pandas etc. Will be using the tank to carry out breeding oso.

the tank will be kept veri simple with oni substrate, DW and moss coupled with a few mineral rocks.

Can any bros comment on the following which i wil be doing/ getting?
1. filling up with 2" of Amazon Ada II. (oso thinking of using Benibachi, anyone got any reviews on it?)
2. a layer of mosura old sea mud powder will be added on top of the substrate, cycling of tank 6 - 8 weeks
3. the tank will be running on a Atman 1200 canister filter. The 3 layers in the canister will have, fm bottom layer - filter wool, 2nd layer - biohomme rings, top layer leaving it empty cos jus in case need to add any peats or activated carbon etc.
4. will DIY 2 pre-filter container(like wat bro koji did - "TODAY i DIY") b4 the Atman canister. The first will be totally filled with wool, the second will be totally filed with K1-media
5. The tank will be running on Hailea 300 chiller with a 3ft rainbar running through all the compartments
6. Will definitely have lights for the tank, maybe a 3ft T5, but any experts can advice on what tubes will be best for the shrimps colours to show?
7. A wrought iron stand is oso ordered which can catered for 2 tanks. ht of stand is 55", plus the tank 13" thus total ht is 68" fm the floor.

how are you going to run your filtration??

atman 1200 flow rate how much??

where will the inlet of the filter be??

better have some holes with mesh for your partitions. hee hee

Contemplating on getting a second tank as the stand can hold 2 tier, oso tank maker say can have better price if do 2 tanks.

Likely set up if having 2 tanks. Thinking of this setup bcos don't want to get another chiller and canister. Understand that water is shared and thus if 1 tank got problem, the other tank will kanna oso.


Any bros got any comments on the above setup? The valves at the powerhead and the canister will be adjusted accordingly so that both flow rate will be similar. The flow rate of power head is abt 800, after going thru the 2 pre-filter container, may drop to ard 400.
Atman 1200 provides ard 1500l flow rate, minus off the filter media, shd drop to ard 1200. Thus there will be lots of testing and getting the flow rate rite during the cycling phase.

will be having this black plastic mesh on top of the dividers which will allows the water to flow thru

ever think of power trip?

for top to bottom tank, i suggest you use over flow method.

and as for the power to drive water thru the canister and chiller, i will use a water pump in the bottom tank. the reason i will not use canister because actually canister needs siphon effet to help with the flow. lets say if your canister is lower than your bottom tank water level, your canister will have a hard time pulling and pushing the water.

as for netting above the partition, shrimps will tends to climb over to the otherside ( normally against the flow )

Either one of the pump stop working your setup will end up in a bad way....

better to use the soil which you are confortable with. i heard some fellow friends who use benibanchi soil with out problem too

normally ppl will add the layer of old sea mud at the bottom of the tank before you lay the soil.

this will be up to indivdual.

this is good that all compartment will have filtered water at the same time. best if you can have inlet in everycompartments too

for colour to show, colour temperature of 12000k is recomanded, water temperature of 22 degree shows the best colour

Tks bro, will consider the overflow method, as for the power trip, think that is one of the main concern of all aqua hobbist. anyway thinking of getting a UPS for all my tanks filtration system, said able to last at least 2 hours during blackout.

Wah seh, thks bro, nvr tot of that.

since you going to spent so much, i rather you get a 3tier rack. easier to manage, over flow method from top to bottom, using a sump instead of filter canister for more media. your 3 feet tank can be 10 mm thick to keep the coldness in longer ( price higher too ).

bro your this setup your house will flood very soon!

its best you just use the cannister, the pump in the tank i dont think its needed!
