The ugf is air powered. Even if the soil breaks down it should be fine coz my main filtration is intact. Actually there are shrimps in there just pretty sparse.

For UGF setup, I would rather layer cover it with green net over the UGF, follow by a layer of quartz, and soil over it. This is to allow the canister's inlet to be stuck into the gravel area (not into the UGF, but placed directly next to it using rainbar running along the back/side.

Quartz over this later, is to reduce suction power to the soil.

Using air driven current in the UGF is a good choice too. So long as the tube is from UGF to surface, where shrimps can't ventured into the UGF. Once in awhile (eg, every few months, stick a hose/tube into the UGF and suck out dirt.

3ft tank... I wonder what this EVIL one (eviltrain) will do with it... partition into 3 sections?
