Terrapin Thread

Yeap.. i've kept them before too, they love to be out of the water and "stone" on top of rocks and get sun tan.. I feed my terrapins with lettuce, pellets. When they grew bigger, i feed feeder fishes(water will foul very fast) but they love it. Just wondering... I read some books, they refer them as "Baskers", known for the red marking on their head. Anyone know about it?

I also noted many ppl saying need to wash hands after touching ku....understand that their poo is poisonous...contains alot of bacteria....hmm....

hmm i nv feed my terrapins any calcium supplement leh. and i dun think they are interested in veg, esp my SST. all about 5"....so i feed them frozen BW eveytime leh. i do sun them though....i would like to enquire on the set-up of tanks for them. mine is just gravel plus water, only a rock large enough for the terrapin to climb up to sun. the rest of the tank is submerged in water. what is the appropriate depth of the water? i tried sloping it but stupid SST dig until everything evens out. i always wanted to add some form of filtration to the tank, like maybe undergravel filter? is that suitable for them?

Well, i have 2 terrapins by co-incidence,never wanted them but little daughter of mine persuaded me so okay i got a pair
but behold, from the little 1 incher now its 3" & 5"
the massive 5" must be a male and it whacks anything like SW,MP,pallets, any vegetable leftovers esp cauliflower buds
just peel them into bite sizes and they devour it
for SW , i will give them the white shell-less ones, and they happiliy swallow them whole
the best part is i keep them in my comm tank with my PB & MS, RTC
they have a manmade kelong or pontoon using styroform where they are able to climb in all all directions to rest whilst tanning in the flouro lights
its joyful to watch and they are friendly and can recognise people to lure food
they will do plenty of diving and swimming and chasing one another and playing plus grabing each other feed etc.
i will keep them until i think they can be set free into the wild one day
hopefully , they will be good turtles forever!

last time also had a pair of terrapin... but died because i went for 1 week holiday... come home both died... they will only abt 2inches

terrapins are very smart one. i used to have a pretty big one. i keep in a tub. it will crawl out of the tub and go around my house. sometimes leave shit on the floor which is very very smelly. and then go back into the tub when it feels like it. one fine day my dad told me release le.

must bask them. even though pellets and vitamins got calcium and vit D3, basking will still be important. makes your terrapin happy too. and basking is UNFILTERED sunlight. meaning the sunlight cannot pass through your window pane, or plastic or whatever.

if cannot sunlight, can buy the special light at LFS. not sure how much.

pellets will be good as staple. can give them treats also. most of them prefer meaty meaty food. but as they grow, anything they also eat.

and don't feed so much. i know they always stretch their head out to wait for food. but they don't need that much food actually. will only dirty the water.

If you do not want them to turn carnivorous, it's better than you stick with pellet and vegetables becoz in the long run, taking too much meat will turn them aggressive and will try to bite fingers if you put your fingers in front of them.

Sunshine is to give them vitamin D3 for their bones and shell to avoid deformatory and having a nice looking shell in future when they grow up.

Sorry bro, as for terrapins. I believe they are vertebrates not invertebrates.
vertebrates are animals with back bones while invertebrates usually doesn't hvae any bones
