To share. I connect sponge filter to my ehiem powerhead intake and link to stackable OHF. As long shrimplets are not affected by the intake of the pump, I feel it's ok. And ehiem doesn't generate much heat from what I see.

The water outlet hole can be blocked up with sponge, so that is not a big issue. A lot of us face problems with this protein film on the surface, which can be removed if you are using sump, as it helps to clear the top. You can also have a pump at the bottom to clear e bottom too, or have 2 water outlets (one top, one bottom).

I am thinking, if you already have a sump, well, u could go for that. Use cheaper medias such as ceramic rings. No need for good medias as the water won't be forced thru the media (pressurized).

There is no 1 right or wrong about this filtration. I remb there were some threads that asked about top filter, overflow, etc.

So, tell us exactly, what is ur setup like? Size, water volume, type of gravel, shrimps, plants, chiller, etc. U mentioned 4ft partition tank. Would be nice to see what you planned. Eviltrain has partitioned tank which he shared his setup. It worked very well.

But if you are considering canister, you need to look at the water volume, and may end up needing multiple canister. I don't know maths how much to use for how much water.
Right now n for the past few days,i've been sketching my planned tank on paper..I'm planning the things need to be bought..So,before buying then regretting, here i m,trying to gather as much pro infos from u all..In my planned tank, there won't be any other plants, only fissidens..So,before i order my tank,i want all the opinions for the filteration part 1st as to me,filteration is the most important subject in building a nice, peaceful shrimp community..

i think u shld let us know what exactly u r planning to keep, tank configuration (fully partitioned or bottom have gap) etc.
with these information, we can all discuss the pros and cons of sump vs canisters for such as setup.
