Aspirating Venturi to be exact. It means the venturi is placed at the inlet of pump that draws in the water & air.

Venturi and needle wheel
To be exact.....For venturi - Water is being pushed into the skimmer body and for the needle wheel - water is drawn into the skimmer body.
Just like our cars, one is rear wheel drive and the other is a front wheel drive... |

But whats the difference between water being 'pushed' into the skimmer body and water 'drawn' into the skimmer body? |

Venturi and Needle wheel
Venturi Skimmers-
1. While water is being pump thru the venturi, air is also drawn in thru a small air inlet. 2. Basically when water leaves the pump there is still no bubble in the water until it reaches the venturi. Check out the pic Needle wheel 1. When water is being suck in by the pump, air is also drawn in thru the air in-let. 2. At this stage the bubbles size is still quite large. 3. When it reaches the needle wheel, the large bubbles are being "chop" into many fine bubbles before going into the skimmer body. 4. Therefore, when water leaves the pump fine bubbles are already in the water. So effectively, one is pushing while the other is pulling. Jus like the rear wheel and front wheel drive car. |

Venturi works in the same principle as a powerhead/Eden 228 where an air hose tubing (or a rigid tube) can be attached to the output pipe and many small bubbles been can blown out into the tank.
