Default Using surface skimmer as overflow

Hi

As I have a couple of small tanks to house my crs. Thinking of setting up a central filter system to a canister and then through a chiller back to the tanks. Thinking of saving cost and not wanting to drill holes in the tank. Wondering if I put a surface skimmer to act as an overflow pipe in each tank and then filter into the canister, would this work?
