I don't think it is a must. My tank currently have sand/stones but for enhancing their colour and having good greenary around them. I think it will be good to have them.

I read on shrimpnow forum that some type of gravel is a must for your shrimps as they need to be able to dig and hunt for their food. Some have said that if you do not have any gravel, your shrimps will be stressed.

I also feel that if you are not planting plants into soil, normal gravel will be better than fine soil.

Yeah. plants are a must as they reduce the.. the.. Nitrate or nitrite. either one, which is produced by the shrimps' waste. Correct me if im wrong.

Not necessary but some soil like ADA Aquasoil Amazonia/Africana, GEX Soil, Magic soil, has feature to bring PH 6 to 7 which suitable for shrimp keeping.

Not necessary to have soil but must have plants to provide hiding place and oxygen for the shrimps and shrimplet,

In my opinion.... appropriate selected soil offers:
- ph adjustment
- provides nutrients not limited to root plants
- trap & decompose waste for bacteria and micro organism
- hiding place for shrimplets
- during FAMINE, becomes an ultimate food source for shrimps...
and many more advantages
