Default Can a normal tank be converted to a sump tank?

Hi Guys,

I have a spare 5 feet tank. Can it be converted into a sump for marine? I planned to setup a FOWLR tank. Do advice, thank you.

How big is the setup? It maybe more practical to use the 5' tank(if the glass is thick enough) and make a new sump.

If you still want to use the 5' tank as a sump, it would unlikely to be a problem since most of the time, the sump won't be filled to the brim with water and there would be lots of glass partitions that would act like braces to hold the sump together.

won't recommend drilling... cuz it'll stress the glass... lr very heavy.. dunno if your glass can take it or not.. also the thickness of the glass.. read about the ibox. if u can get it, then get it la.. dun need to drill hole, better..

How thick is the tank's glass and what are the dimensions? In marine, generally you will need thicker glass than freshwater so it might not be suitable if the glass is to thin.

Yup, you need to drill holes or you can purchase an I~Box which would require no drilling of holes. Perhaps you can approach Goh_TM who can help you build the sump and maybe able to help you drill the holes as well.

Here's some info on the I~Box:

This I~box thing is interesting. My tank is 5x2x2, with 12mm glass. It is about a year old. It is suitable for marine?

Thanks
